Just because I have heard of the Higgs particle, doesn't mean I understand what it does (or what it's responsible for). And that goes for the rest of what those smart people at CERN do.....I haven't got a clue :rotfl: but I am in awe.

The Higgs boson was (probably) proven to exist just a few days ago by some experiments in CERN, Switzerland. It's a 'particle' that's thought to be responsible for other particles having mass, see e.g. here ;).
