I see the instructions changed from when I did it. I opened it in Paint and combined the first two lines together e.g. WW in one block. One is an upper letter, and the next is a lower letter. Then I combined the 2nd and 4th rows together E and U in one block and so forth until there was only 6 rows (with 2 letters in each block). I then put all the rows close to each other so that there aren't gaps in between. Then I started at the red block and followed the instructions filling it with colour until I reached the X on the right hand side. U=Up, D=Down. Try and figure out the rest.

It is one word. Easiest is to use an anagram server on the internet (google anagram)

The whole thing proceeds in the order of the sentence. Where one word leaves off is where the next starts, there is no jumping around. So you've got a word from the crossword puzzle and when you read it down it ends at one of the letters in the search. So you know the first letter of the next word is there is one word in that search and where that ends takes you into the maze. You'll follow the maze through and get a few more words. Knowing that you need to end off at the beginning of the next word should help you figure out the path since you know where the last part is: I actually ended up figuring out the crossword then the maze then the checkered clue and working my way backwords for the word search part.

I started at the "l" leading down from the word "goal" and spelt out "is now" but then there is no way to lead down to the checkered bit without coming accross a dead end

you are at the wrong part in the maze. When you are in the word search, don't just look for a word across or down. Once you're in the maze it should end right at the checkered part, there is a letter there and that's the last letter in the last word for the maze.
