:arms: You're welcome :)

Ow, I just notice: it is 11 November :arms: The 11th day of the 11th month :cheer: This means...
- start of Carnaval :cheer: Or wait, start of the preperations for Carnaval :bonk: At 11:11 the first meeting of the board of eleven will be held :clown: The real deal isn't until ... Easter? :doubt: I'm not sure, it is only celebrated in the South to be honest :whistling
- Saint Maarten :arms: Which is a bit like Halloween, but more just for the kids to go trick or treating with their lanterns :jossun:
- Lets remember that 90 years ago WO I ended :arms: I know loads of crap happened afterwards and it wasn't the war to end all wars (at all!) but it is definitely worth remembering :) At least, I think so.

So, for anybody who thought today is just like any other day...

Spoiler:
It is :arms: And isn't that just fine?

Re: Nordinho Pub Part 33 1/3

Lest we forget....

We should not make jokes about the wars because if they didn't go out there and fight the world would not be a safe place. Canada is fighting in a war now to keep us safe.

Re: Nordinho Pub Part 33 1/3

Hi there Moondust :) Nice running into you again.

You've got a difficult subject there though - War... All I can say about it really is that I've never been in one, though my country has fought in some during my lifetime. It has many shades of grey...
And sometimes humour is used, to make it somehow barable. That doesn't mean it isn't taken serious  It is just... it sheds a different light.
It doesn't make us forget what it all is for ;) Or what it is all supposed to be for, what we hope it is for.

Sorry if I'm not totally comprehendable :bonk: It is just such a difficult subject. But I guess it is an important one

Noted and replied to :)

Now, I know we're talking serious now but this is the pub and a talk about war is not the happiest one to walk into ... so lets have some music :)

npfan 11-12-2008 01:43 AM

Re: Nordinho Pub Part 33 1/3

how about some war music? :P

(disclaimer: no, I do not take war lightly)

moondust 11-12-2008 01:47 AM

Re: Nordinho Pub Part 33 1/3

itSFMe you can post the information in the pub if everyone is okay with that. We all want to understand it more so we can appreciate it more don't we?

itSFMe 11-12-2008 01:52 AM

Re: Nordinho Pub Part 33 1/3

NP :arms: Ow boy, I'm up late  :)
And yeah, there is loads of war music - or at least songs about war. Much poems too  Ow, and paintings...

How 'bout this one NP? It is quite patriotic (USA) and Moondust, maybe it explains a little tittly bit about what it is like to fight in a war. Not that I claim to have any knowledge on that.

Moondust, maybe it is better if I PM (not page) you about what you wanna know? I mean, it is more general history what you're asking about and the pub ain't no history class :)

Re: Nordinho Pub Part 33 1/3

hi all you fine people on this day of remembrance how are you all?
i don't think it matters what war it was/ we are evidence of a fellowship that transcends country, religion, race and political persuasion/ i cry when i see the reports of the congo at the moment and really begin to consider if i should renew my contract with the air force

itSFMe 11-12-2008 02:20 AM

Re: Nordinho Pub Part 33 1/3

Vivi :arms: :cheer:

Wow, I didn't knew you were in the air force!? Yeah... Congo... I zapped away from the news today, I couldn't look at it... I wish people who lived there could do the same thing :bonk:

I'm not sure what there is to be done about it though. The more I learn about the situation there the more I feel like it is a hopeless case - but one can't believe that because that would mean giving up on people! There must be something we can do and I wish I wasn't thinking about what that would be but doing it.

Ok, that sounds very down... sorry for that. I'm really trying to find a postive and constructive approach. Maybe I just think too much.

some of the battles in the first world war saw up to 25,000 people being killed- i saw tonight on the tv a man that was there- an english man- that said that we should also remember the german men that were lost- i feel a great sympathy with him life is too short to wage war with those that could be our family

itSFMe 11-12-2008 02:32 AM

Re: Nordinho Pub Part 33 1/3

Yes, in those trenches whole villages lost their male-populaion :bonk:

That English man, is he maybe the oldest survivor (112 yrs old)? In my mind I think he's totally right to say that we shouldn't forget about the losses on the "central" side, but I do think he's very strong (as a survivor) to say so. I mean, for us it is 90 years agoo (and we can analyze it to bits), for him I imagine it might feel like yesterday some days...
What I mean to say is that when I look back at WWI I don't really see an enemy, more an unfortunate chain of events that lead to useless battles (for both sides). I mean, the same square kilometre of land that is in hand of the one side the one week and in hands of the other the other week and... :wall: Just useless fighting ...
But for him to say that while he has seen his comrades shot to bits, that is a whole other thing.

i served 9 years regular and was called up for extrra service in two "wars"' my own philosophy is obviously affected by that, but i only want to be known with anybody from anywhere that has a point of view!!

That is very true. Life is too short but atleast everyone has one. It may not be very happy but they had one.

Do you happen to know any interesting information about World War 2. What areas did they battle in? What was it like? What kind of machines did they use?(tanks, guns.ect.)

my dad was in the army during WW2. he served at the battle of the bulge.
He told me he was on his stomach crawling towards the front line when the bombers flew overhead and ended the war.

got two purple hearts and a box full of medals during his tour of duty

Wow BG38, that is quite the story! I've actually been in that area during a holiday - I guess it is partly for your dad that I can even go on holiday there. :)

And Vivi, 9 years is a long time. Respect.

Moondust, maybe you should google a bit more around - there is a lot to find about WW2 on internet and definately not only on wikipedia ;)

I have to go now, I have to get up early tomorrow. Take care you all :winky:

yea, if you ask me, people don't show their thanks enough for the men and women who sacrificed (and those who still do today ) in order to keep us free and safe

I mean, how do you thank someone for voluntarily risking life and limb for you?

i know that this site is neutral/ but please look at what is happening in the congo' this is the start of a much wider war than we can imagine'- much bigger than the wars that we have experienced and with a ferocity and brutality that we thought was a thing of the past

That is definately what it looks like, and it seems like nobody has a (proper) response to it. I'm not sure talking is the way to go, but have no clue what good UN soldiers could do either.

speaking of war, there are still some people that feel bad for the 6 million Jews killed by Nazis in WWII

compare that to this:
30 million Asians, 23 million of which are Chinese, were completed annihilated by the Japanese around the same time
a bunch of older-generation people here are still angry at the Japanese for this

lol anyway I sent you another pm. I kind of don't want to look at them because I don't like seeing people die and I'm not sure if it is a dieing one or not. I want to know what kind of battle fields did they fight in?

How did World War Two start?
