Was he a missionary?
Was his discovery that still benefits us today a 'general' thing (like hygiene, or vaccines to prevent diseases) or a cure for a specific disease?

sparky is watching election results in the Netherlands.

Is this a 19th century man? To Hel's question whether he was a "doctor/medical man", you replied "Medicine was his profession." Were you intentionally avoiding saying he was "a doctor"?

You misconstrued my answer...
He was a medical doctor by profession...his discovery is NOT related to medicine, though.

He was a missionary and his discovery benefits us now too.

It's not Dr.Livingstone, I presume ?

Spoiler:
searching for Livingstone, I noticed a pic that looked a bit like your man, but that turned out to be another one

Nope, it's Henry Faulds, maybe (one of) the inventor(s) of fingerprinting. Interesting!

We have a winner
Our man is Henry Faulds the sometimes inventor of the finger prints.
I don't know why they describe him as an 'inventor'. Fingrtprints were always there. He 'discoverd' how to make use of them...
You are next, Helanren

Speaking of disputed discoveries, the same can go for inventions or other creative designs, as this woman can tell you. Though the whole world now enjoys a specific version of her creation, she is completely ignored by ‘official history’, despite the fact that she properly patented it - twice. That may be because she is a woman, or it may be because she had originally designed it to be something completely different (the fact that she totally looks like a cross between Groucho Marx and Miss Marple probably doesn’t help either ).

What she had meant to be a political statement decrying one of the evils of modern society (one by the way that is still reflected in the name by which we know her work) in practice turned out to illustrate the opposite effect.
She was soon no longer the only one producing it either, as others were inspired by it and made their own, until finally one person appropriated it as his very own – and he is the one whose life story we now know. But then that’s how things go.....

Monopoly

Don't ask me why, but the moment I read this: "What she had meant to be a political statement decrying one of the evils of modern society" I thought: Monoply...
