Re: Widow Blacks Garden Centre Not yet though, lol!!! You will have the time to get your courage up because you don't do it till the stem ( or trunk of the tree) is 5 to 6 inches above the seed. Just remember it is for the good of the plant.;) I also wanted to tell you (and anyone else who has to trim the leaves of a plant when the edges or tips get brown) that I have found that if I use childrens plastic scissors the leaves don't tend to get brown on the edges from trimming them like they do when I use metal scissors. |
Re: Widow Blacks Garden Centre Makes sense, Nef. I'll keep that in mind next time I go a-snipping. I do believe my son has a pair I could "borrow".... heeheehee Actually, my Peace Lily turns quite a bit and I find myself trimming her often. That tip will come in right handy for her. Thanks, darlin'! :hug2 |
Re: Widow Blacks Garden Centre YVW!!! |

Re: Widow Blacks Garden Centre LOL!!! Yes I do, it is amazing to watch it grow out of a seed and know it is going to be a tree! |
Re: Widow Blacks Garden Centre Oh yeah! It is so cool!!! :) I also showed her my elephant ear (well, not my elephant ear but my plant) and we discovered that she has not one sprout now but two and the other section of the plant that I stuck back in the soil after her break is sprouting two new leaves as well so I'm just about as tickled as I can be!!! I don't what to do with myself!! http://www.smilieshq.com/smilies/party0049.gif |
Re: Widow Blacks Garden Centre Quote:
USDA Zones 4 - 9 Blooms: Spring to Early summer Colors: Pink, rose, lilac, red or white The foliage resembles a tuft of grass and is great in high winds! 2. Chelone lyonii (Turtlehead) USDA Zones 2 - 9 Blooms: Late summer to late fall Colors: Pink, white or red Chelone can survive almost anything. They do need extra moisture if planted in hot sun, but otherwise are undemanding. Attractive seedheads mean deadheading is not necessary. Plants attain full size within 3-4 years and are long-lived. 4. Hosta USDA Zones 3 - 9 Blooms: Generally mid-Summer Colors: Purples or white Hostas are extremely low care perennials. If the deer and slugs didn't love them so much, they'd be almost perfect. Since they do most of their growing early in the season, a few applications of a systemic deer deterrent can greatly lessen the deer damage and the thicker leaved varieties are less attractive to slugs. Most do best in partial shade, but the golden leaf varieties can handle a good deal of sun. As for the veggies...peppers-choose your colours and baby tomoatoes are always fun, but you have some type of tomoatoe don't you?...anyway...lucky you to have that groovy rooftop...how fun is that!!! |
Re: Widow Blacks Garden Centre Okay, *siren blares* I'm looking for a calming hand to help me. My avocado tree is growing!! ... but I mean GROWING!!! She's getting bigger every single time I look at her! Her root, too, is getting longer and starting to sprout other roots!! WHEN DO I STICK HER IN EARTH????!!!!! Oh! ... Widow, so nice to see you, darling. My goodness, it's been a while, hasn't it? So good of you to drop by... *looks above to corners of ceiling* Guess you're not hanging about since I don't see any cobwebs starting.... Pity! http://www.smilieshq.com/smilies/evilgrin0045.gif |
Re: Widow Blacks Garden Centre Oh how exciting!!! Ok first off I wanted to mention that by adding a little bit of charcoal to the botton of your glass helps keep the water swwet and yummy for the growing seed. In 2 to 6 weeks, when roots and leaves (if any has begun sprouting at top)are well formed the plant is set in potting soil. Unless they're moved into soil within a few weeks or months after germination, they'll begin to deteriorate. So how long has it been...could you add charcoal and then next week plant? Or in two? Or does that surpass the six weeks? They are also easily sprouted in a well-drained 4- or 5-inch pot of porous, fertile soil. The top of the seed should just barely peek above the surface of the soil. If the soil is kept fairly moist and the temperature is between 60 and 70 degrees, the seed will begin to sprout and a pretty, leafy plant will develop. Good luck and maybe Nefertitiwill come in and say something...she is actually growing them...no? |
Re: Widow Blacks Garden Centre Oh K'Lyn I am so excited to hear that your little avocado seed has started to really grow!!! It will soon sprout leaves but leave it as it is until the trunk of the tree is about 6 or 8 inches above the seed. By that time you should have some leaves and you will see that some other new leaves are starting. Now I know this is hard for you(remember it is for the good of the plant so you will have a fuller tree) you are going to pinch off that NEW growth of leaves, there usually is about 2 or 3 of them. As Widow said you can pot it when you start getting leaves. The main thing is make sure it has as much sun as possible. Please keep us posted on how your tree is doing!!! |
