Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Thats who I was looking for! Well she's an assistant host, anyway. LOL I couldn't very well say "letter-turning assistant." :rotfl: Like that wouldn't have given it away. Anyway, you are correct! :arms: Very well done!

K'Lyn 05-02-2008 05:29 AM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

:lol9: I guess not.

Television

What was the name of the character on the Fat Albert show who always wore the hat part way down his face?

(And just for the record although this show initially started running in the '70s it did carry over into the '80s.)

vtjess423 05-05-2008 02:31 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Would that have been Dumb Donald??

K'Lyn 05-05-2008 07:19 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

It was indeed he! Good job, Jess. :)

What popular video game series debuted in 1988 that centers around a popular American sport? :)

K'Lyn 05-05-2008 10:53 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Would that be Double Dare?

vtjess423 05-05-2008 11:09 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Nope, sorry that's not what I'm looking for. Remember it's a VIDEO Game and one based on a specific Sport. :)

Helanren 05-06-2008 01:09 AM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Can't say I ever heard of it (which by itself is not surprising :)), but I think you are looking for Madden NFL, based of course on American football.

vtjess423 05-06-2008 02:39 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

And you would be correct, Hels!! :arms: It's a pretty popular video game in the US and there is even a "curse" related to being the player on the cover. :winky:

Nice job! You're up. :)

Helanren 05-06-2008 03:28 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Funny article about that 'curse'

SPORTS

Looking at the years 1980-1989, what do on the one hand Reference Point and Nashwan, and on the other hand Pleasant Colony, Swale, Alysheba, Risen Star and Sunday Silence have in common?

K'Lyn 05-06-2008 04:58 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Not quite sure what answer you're looking for exactly so I'll just give you what I got:

It seems they're all triple crown wnners in horse racing; Reference Point and Nashwan from the English Triple Crown and Pleasant Colony, Swale, Alysheba, Risen Star, and Sunday Silence from the American Triple Crown.

Helanren 05-06-2008 05:16 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

almost, but your answer isn't complete yet...... :)

K'Lyn 05-06-2008 10:32 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

They were all double winners within their respective year of winning?

Helanren 05-06-2008 11:54 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Yep :jossun:

I wanted to make a question about racehorses, if only because they always have 'interesting' names , so I was hoping for a real winner. But two out of three was the best they could do in the 80's......

Your turn!

K'Lyn 05-07-2008 12:19 AM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Sweet! Talk about a gamble! I figured worse case scenario I'd be off and someone would typically come in and steal it from me.

What Grammy-award winning band disbanded in the mid '80s only to be reformed by a couple of the members in the late '90s?

vtjess423 05-07-2008 03:32 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Really not giving us much to go on, are you, hun? :lol9:

I'm really struggling to find anything and have resorted to searching the Grammy winner lists. :rotfl: But I haven't found much of anything so I'm going to just make a random guess and hope for a hint later. :winky:

Maybe Survivor??

K'Lyn 05-07-2008 10:28 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

No, it's not Survivor and I did forget a bit of info so here it is:

Music

What 1983 Grammy-award winning band started in the late '70s, disbanded in the mid '80s only to be reformed by a couple of the members in the late '90s?

vtjess423 05-07-2008 11:05 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Ok, I'm still not getting much on this but maybe...

The Police??

K'Lyn 05-07-2008 11:26 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Nope. :winky:

As usual, :google: is your bestest friend!!

vtjess423 05-08-2008 03:19 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Well google maybe your bestest friend, but it's not doing much for me at the moment. :rotfl:

But here's another guess: Men at Work??

K'Lyn 05-08-2008 10:59 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

You see? :google: is your bestest friend after all!! That's the answer. Good job, Jess. :)

vtjess423 05-09-2008 02:21 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Well I dunno about that since I found the answer on wiki. :rotfl: But anways... :winky:

What year did Walt Disney enter the home video market? And how many titles did they release?

And for a Bonus: List three of the titles they released in the first batch. :)

Helanren 05-09-2008 03:32 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Disney first entered the home video market on march 4, 1980 with the release of 13 titles including such all-time greats as

- 'Pete's Dragon',
- 'The Black Hole',
- 'The Love Bug',
- 'Escape to Witch Mountain',
- 'Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier',
- '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea',
- 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks',
- 'The North Avenue Irregulars',
- 'The Apple Dumpling Gang', and
- 'Hot Lead and Cold Feet'

makes you wonder how they succeeded !

vtjess423 05-09-2008 05:57 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

And you would be correct, Hels! :arms: Nice job!

Helanren 05-09-2008 06:20 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Thank you :)! Actually, after looking up those movies, i can see why they would do OK as home video's, but at first sight I thought them a bit obscure....;)

Politics

With the Clinton/Obama race coming to an end, we now know there will be either a female or an African American presidential candidate this year.
But who, in the 80's, was both the first woman and the first African American to get her name on the ballot in all 50 American states, and in D.C.?

Bonus points for the name of her party and the total number of votes she got ;)

K'Lyn 05-09-2008 07:03 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Would that be Lenora B. Fulani who ran as the candidate for the New Alliance Party. She received 0.2% of the vote, or almost a quarter of a million votes.

Helanren 05-09-2008 11:13 PM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

That's correct :jossun:! And though it may seem insignificant, that number of votes in 1988 still stands as the record for highest number of votes by any woman running for president of the United States......

Your turn again ;)

Spoiler:
Interesting anecdote:

In the 1984 election, the NAP only secured a ballot spot in 33 states. In 1988 they tried anything they could, including attempts to gain the nomination of small independent parties which existed around the country. As a result, Fulani had six different running mates; different ones in different states.
Asked which one would become Vice President if she won, she answered "If we got elected, we'd figure it out."

Cool! That was really interesting as I never even heard about any of that.

Well, okay then - get-up

Would that talkshow be The Oprah Winfrey show?

Helanren 05-14-2008 10:41 AM

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE

It is - might be worthwhile trying to reserve a ticket for that last show, see if she is going to give away cars or helicopters or so to the audience

You're up :jossun:
