Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE I'm not sure if that is 80's slang, but to me it just means asking for a lighter or matches ???? |

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Would that be Don't You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds? |

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Catchall In March of 1983 a flea market trader was sentenced to a total of 34 years in prison. What were his crimes? |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE  quite a character  "Giovanni Vigliotto (c. 1930 – 1991) was a multiple bigamist and fraudster who married 105 women in 14 countries between 1949 and 1981 and abandoned them." 105???? in 14 countries???? and 'only' 53 at the time??? Vigliotto was sentenced to 28 years in prison for fraud and 6 for bigamy and fined $336,000. According to Wikipedia, he was sentenced on April 11, 1983 (allthough this NY times article, published on march 29, 1 day after the trial started according to Wiki, already knew the outcome :)), so I guess next friday his 105 brides will celebrate the silver anniversary :)! |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Well I'm not sure of the date, I just wrote what I found. But you are correct and get bonus points for a very thorough answer! :nodder: Nice job, Hels! You are up. |

next: catchall(?) What New York hotel, named after one of the western states, became world famous in december 1980, and for what reason? |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Would that be the Washington Hilton Hotel, which became famous for being the site of Ronald Reagan's assassination attempt by John Hinckley, Jr.. |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Nope, that one is in D.C. and the Reagan assassination attempt occurred on March 30, 1981, but you are quite warm....... |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Shoot! Missed that! Well, what keeps popping up is the John Lennon murder which took place in front the Dakota building but that isn't a western state, is it? Nor is it a hotel. Hmmm.... this one is proving to be more difficult than I thought... |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE No, my fault, it isn't a hotel :embarasse, you're right, but a regular appartment building ! According to Wikipedia, the building was named "The Dakota" because of Edward Clark's (who had it built in the 1880's) fondness for the names of the new western states and territories", which would have included the Dakota Territory. About as far West as you wanted to go at the time, I suppose... :). My mistake, over to you :jossun:! |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Oh sweet! I wasn't going to post that thought but figured I'd better ... just in case. Thank goodness I'm not afraid of looking like a twit! Television What was Eddie Murphy's skit about vocabulary called on SNL? |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE This site assures me it was simply called "Eddie Murphy's Skit About Vocabulary", but I'm not sure how reliable their answers are :rotfl: |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Well, that site is ill-informed because I can personally vouch for the answer since I remember those skits clearly. And he did a hilarious job too. |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE I think it was called "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood." :) |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Yes, it sure was, Jess. Good job! :) |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Thanks. :) Film What was the first feature film to be authorized by the Chinese Government to be filmed in the Forbidden City? And when was it released? |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE That was "The Last Emperor", released in 1987. Spoiler: |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Yup! :nodder: That's the movie I was looking for. :) You're up Helanren. Nice job! |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Literature Which 1980's book by a well known Dutch columnist describes the Dutch language in a "different" way, as shown by its description in Chapter 0: ".... is Dutch on vacation. .... is Dutch without the awful utility generally attached to that language. .... words and sentences look like their Dutch counterparts at first glance. But then, .... is meant for the second glance." For bonus points: give at least 4 different pseudonyms used by the writer of this book :)! |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Okay, let me see if I can answer this properly: Book - Opperlandse taal- & letterkunde (I think) Author - Hugo Brandt Corstius Pseudonyms - Battus, Piet Grijs, Stoker, Victor Baarn, Dolf Cohen, Maaike Helder, Peter Malenkov and Talisman. |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Points for the answer, bonus points for the names, and triple bonus points to be won if you can convince me you've read the book ! Over to you :jossun:! |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE What would it take to convince you? :winky: Catchall John Carpenter made a movie which was based on a Stephen King novel. What was the movie/novel entitled? what year was the movie? |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE I believe that would be Christine which was released in 1983. :jossun: |

Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Politics Other than on ceremonial visits, none of the Kennedy's made it to the White House in the 80's. But which vicepresident was definitely no Jack Kennedy? |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Not that I understand the question or anything; I'm just going to muster up a guess and say George H. W. Bush. |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE I do understand that answer  but it is not what I was looking for... |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Ok, I really had no idea what you were talking about with that question, Hels, but when I searched for "Jack Kennedy" I actually found something. :lol9: Would you be referring to Dan Quayle? As I found that "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy" was a famous phrase spoken by American Democratic vice-presidential candidate Senator Lloyd Bentsen to Republican vice-presidential candidate Senator Dan Quayle during the 1988 vice-presidential debate. Taken from wiki. :) |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE You don't remember that :)? Spoiler: But then of course, Dan Quayle is one of my favourite examples of politics in America...... Spoiler: Anyway, your answer is correct, so you're up :jossun:! |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE Well considering I was 8 during that presidential election, I didn't really have any idea what was going on nor did I have any interest in politics. :rotfl: I barely remember anything that happened when I was 8, let alone about the vice presidential debates. :winky: Anyway, let's try this: Television Which popular game show host's first television appearance was as one of the first contestants called on a 1980 episode of the Price is Right? And when did he/she begin their role in the one they still hold today? :) |
Re: 80's TRIVIA CHALLENGE I'd say Vanna White but she isn't really the host of the game show. She became, however, the "letter-turning assistant" to Pat Sajak in Wheel Of Fortune on Dec. 13, 1982. |
