Re: Pictionary

Is it a children's book?

Because I see a lot of those with Lion and Rabbit type themes -

Here's one called "The Lion and the Hare"

And here's a place with another story called "The Lion and the Hare"

Helanren 08-01-2008 03:13 PM

Re: Pictionary

I was wondering about that as well (found a lot of those and liked for instance this title :)), but with so much choice, I figured it had to be something else. Haven't found anything yet though :)!

rjk1010 08-01-2008 07:13 PM

Re: Pictionary

@rbud, it's not a children's book this time. :p

Some hints:
The lion and rabbit could be substituted with other types of animals. And the book title has only 1 word. :)

That would suggest the answer has something to do with hunting or stalking a prey?

There are too many 'hunt' books to search (I suppose every detective and thriller ever written has the word 'hunt' in its blurb, so search machines find them all, not to mention writers called Hunt or Hunter ), I found a few Stalkers (for instance here, here and here, but though Faye Kellerman is rather well known they do not quite seem to jump out as the answer, so for the moment I'll go with Prey by Michael Crighton. That one at least came on top of the search list ;)!

rjk1010 08-03-2008 06:59 PM

Re: Pictionary

And you're absolutely right to choose the top searched book with a hunting/stalking themeas your answer.

Your turn, Helanren. :)

Re: Pictionary

I keep telling myself I should prepare one or two of these in advance, but somehow I never do.... :)! Then when I had one, Nord was down, so I had to go to Jimbo's alternative (to solve another one , means I need to make one up again...)

Anyway, there Rbud told us we had to be old to solve her clue, so I decided to come up with a real oldie but goldie:

Songtitle

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...csongtitle.jpg

rjk1010 08-05-2008 06:59 PM

Re: Pictionary

I can recognize certain oldies when they are played but I don't necessarily know their titles... can you tell I have no idea what the answer is?

I see a bird singing outside a tea shop but I can't find any song titles that fit that description... how about "Bird song" by Grateful Dead?

Helanren 08-05-2008 07:09 PM

Not old enough ;)!

rjk1010 08-06-2008 07:46 PM

Re: Pictionary

There are these but I don't think any of them are right? :p

Helanren 08-07-2008 12:26 AM

Re: Pictionary

Nope, the songtitle contains the name of the bird, not "bird" itself. And there is another clue in the picture.....;)

edit: also, I just found out the song is the title of a film as well, if that's any help. Not that it is a very well known film I suppose (at least, I didn't know of it :)), but it has its own Wikipedia page.

Drat, I really thought I was onto something, but now with this last post -
and the edit, it all fell through, I guess. :doubt:

I was going to go with "Mockingbird" as the song title, (it's been around since 1963, according to Wiki.) And the bird resembles yours -
Attachment 35416
And my theory on the other clue was that it's the state bird of Texas,
and we all (at least in the U.S.) know that
Spoiler:
T is for Texas!
But with your statement that "bird" itself was not in the title, and the fact that I couldn't find a movie named simply "Mockingbird" (though some have it IN their title) kinda shot it all down.

But, see, I have been working at it! :lol9:

Anything close about my guess at all?

Not old enough.... :)
- and it is not an American song, let alone a Texan one! You'll need more than just a 'T' from that clue.....

Re: Pictionary

Would this be

"A Nightingale Sang on Berkeley Square" by Maschwitz/Sherwin/Strachey?

This is the Glenn Miller Orchestra:
YouTube - A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square/Glenn Miller and his O

Lovely song! I like it very much :)

And here's some nice trivia about Gunter's Tea Shop

Actually, I think it's "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" ;), but yes, I was looking for the WWII song, most famously performed by Vera Lynn of course.

This is how Berkeley Square looked in the 18th century, you can see it didn't change that much !
Spoiler:
Attachment 35420

(I found that same story on another site :))

I was wondering if somebody would google Gunter's Tea Shop, nice to see you found it though

Your turn next :jossun:!

Flamenco_Fleur 08-07-2008 11:38 AM

Re: Pictionary

Well, the 'i' is right next to the 'o', so count that as a typo

A while ago I finished this wonderful book:

rjk1010 08-07-2008 07:14 PM

Re: Pictionary

@Helanren, I thought Gunter's is a made up name so I never thought to google that! Btw, the song you chose reminds me of Benny Goodman's music. :)

And Fleur, good work on the right answer and great drawing btw (I like the rich texture of the grass :)).

Is it "The Kite Runner"?

Flamenco_Fleur 08-08-2008 08:47 AM

Re: Pictionary

Indeed it is "The Kite Runner"! Way to go rjk :)

Thanks for the compliment btw. :embarasse

I'll return later with a picture. :)

[EDIT]:
Another book and here's the clue:

Love that picture for its simplicity :)! Have no idea what it is yet, haven't even had time to really search, just wanted to mention it!

rbud57 08-10-2008 12:51 PM

Re: Pictionary

Would it be "Ella Minnow Pea" by Mark Dunn?

rjk1010 08-10-2008 07:12 PM

Re: Pictionary

@Helanren, thank you. :)

@rbud, sorry, no. Pea isn't the exact word that's in the title... :)

I know vegetables don't come in uniform shapes (not counting those canned ones :p) but the snap pea is looking kind of peculiar, no?

Helanren 08-11-2008 11:25 PM

Re: Pictionary

It's probably not the correct answer (since the 'action' part is missing from the picture), but after watching the Olympic hockeymatches
Spoiler:
that's fieldhockey for you North Americans, who insist on calling icehockey 'hockey' :)
I thought your bean looks like a stick, so how about "Snap Shot"??

edit: A better guess is probably "Snap Hook" by John R. Corrigan

rjk1010 08-12-2008 07:37 PM

Re: Pictionary

Good try but sorry, no. :)
"Snap" isn't in the title... think of another word that is related to peas. And I intentionally drew the pea into that shape which resembles something

On a side note, isn't it the same thing with football? Funny how American football is called football since most of the time the players carry/throw the ball around inside of kicking it.

Helanren 08-26-2008 11:17 PM

Re: Pictionary

Even having looked at its page at Amazon, I have no idea what this book is about, but Jpod seems to fit the bill, so for what it's worth that's my next guess :)

rjk1010 08-27-2008 07:01 PM

Re: Pictionary

*ding, ding, ding, ding, ding*

You're right!

Spoiler:
JPod is by Douglas Coupland about a group of game developers & their relationship to the marketing department.
Something interesting about the book: Coupland quoted almost a gazillion (ok, so I didn't exactly count but there were many, many) digits of PI which used up about 40 pages. Hmmm, maybe I should think that a rip-off? :p
And I think the book is visually interesting (how some words are laid-out - reminds me of calligrams).

Your turn, helanren. :)

Re: Pictionary

:arms: Yay, Helanren! Good going!

Glad someone finally figured it out, I kept trying to come up with something, but nothing ever looked good enough to guess.

And great to see you back, by the way - was beginning to wonder

whether your "aging laptop" finally gave out! :winky:

Re: Pictionary

Well, I'm guessing it's hot, or tired, or both, but that's as far as I've gotten.

It's not a hot dog, that's for sure - but am I going in the right direction with "hot" ?

My first association was with the type of public advertisements we have in Holland at the moment: since smoking was officially banned in all restaurants, cafes etc. last summer, we get these ads with disappointed sigarettes that no longer can enter their favourite places (can't blame them :)!).

However, stealing from rbud, I'll go with "Hot rod" ;)

rjk1010 09-08-2008 06:08 PM

Re: Pictionary

Sorry for the delay, guys; was busy over the weekend and didn't get a chance to log-on. :)

Good try, rbud. You did guess in the right direction but Helanren has the correct answer - it is indeed hot rod.

Over to you, Helanren. :)

 Oh dear, I'm not really ready!

But I'll post this little one to keep it going!

It's a song title. Probably not very difficult! :doubt:

(I'm so bad at making them difficult!) :lol9:

Re: Pictionary

Um, it's not very difficult  - you've got me stumped! There isn't a song called "evil sunset"... I'll google some more & maybe inspiration will strike! :p

Re: Pictionary

1 Attachment(s)
But if it were a sunset, wouldn't there be pretty colors?

This is more of a night thing. And it's not good, like this one! ;)
Spoiler:

rjk1010 09-13-2008 06:03 PM

Re: Pictionary

Aha, so it's not a sunset (thought it was with the orange, pinkish colour :p) but rather a moon. Bad moon? Evil moon? Is the background scenery significant?

Helanren 09-14-2008 06:19 PM

Re: Pictionary

1 Attachment(s)
Everybody knows that at harvest time, we have to work long into the night, so obviously, the answer must be "Harvest Moon" by Neil Young:
Attachment 35836
And even if, by the remotest chance, that answer wasn't completely correct, weren't you glad to see that clip, or rather, to hear the song again :)???

rbud57 09-14-2008 08:50 PM

Re: Pictionary

Wow, that was nice, Helanren!

- though not the song I was after, I'm sorry to say. :doubt:

You still need to take into account
Spoiler:
the face on the moon - doesn't it look familiar?

(rjk had that part figured out, it's in her post!)

- and what the moon is doing.

And go back in time from your guess, maybe 20+ years.

Oh, and one last hint -
Spoiler:
the last line of the song is known as a famous "Mondegreen."
(words confused with others, which are not correct but sound like the right ones.)
