nothing whatever to do with smoking- and you're right it is mr. watts, but i'm not interested in his name - you'll have to do a little more detective work yet!

good try, but nowhere near! you need the name of the first man and what the other one is- one word two syllables (there is a the in the title though, so you got that!)- i'll just say that this book was the first of its kind

just saw your post scouser- between the two of you it should be getting easier now

I think I have found it...the Moonstone by Wilkie Collins.

Spoiler:
Dickens's protégé, Wilkie Collins (1824–1889)—sometimes referred to as the "grandfather of English detective fiction"—is credited with the first great mystery novel, The Woman in White. His novel The Moonstone (1868) was described by T. S. Eliot as "the first and greatest of English detective novels" and by Dorothy L. Sayers as "probably the very finest detective story ever written

Thanks Vivi and Scouser, I would have never found it without Vivi's hints about ''first'' and ''detective'' and Scousers find of Keith Moon.
Well I have one ready for you, it's not my proudest work I'm afraid, but here goes....another movie

Spoiler:
pictionary-pictionary.jpg

Ooooooh, I thought this movie had been released internationally, but now I'm having doubts. So I'm telling you it is a Dutch movie, but there is an English title known on Google.
