Yes,
Irving was a wrestler himself at Exeter and the University of Pittsburgh, and a coach later on; in many of his books, his characters are wrestlers too (best known of which is of course Garp).
Your picture reminds me of an anecdote I heard about Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery: apparently, when he was a kid, his mother would send out one of the others after him, saying "go see what Bernie is doing and tell him to stop it". Though whether that is a true anecdote and really about Monty I do not know, it seems something a lot of mothers could say...

Now to go and find an answer.....
edit:
Not so easy....
First, I though that that was Hugh Grant, but the only title I can come up with for him is
- "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason",
and that's not really that close to the picture (besides, on second thought, it probably isn't Hugh Grant anyway...).
Then, I looked for the mother/son theme, opens up lots of possibilities:
- Mother and Son (1997)
- Conversations with Mother (2004)
- Surviving My Mother (2007)
- What My Mother Told Me (1995)
but those are really not that well known, so I don't think one of them is what you meant...
Finally, I decided it was his wife/girlfriend which led me to
- "Emily's Reasons Why Not" (2006)
- "10 Great Reasons" (2008) (no, that's TV)
- Reason Over Passion (1969)
but somehow I still don't think any of them is right, so I'll have to pass for the moment
