Re: Where In The World Am I?

I'll start with the obvious guess: is it in Amsterdam? (or at least in the Netherlands)? :)

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Looks like it, doesn't it ? But no, it isn't....

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Really?...that makes it a bit harder :) As New York was previously called New Amsterdam, I'll ask: is it in North-America?

Helanren 04-05-2008 02:26 PM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

No, moving in the wrong direction (unless of course you go on and on, as the world is round )!

This really doesn't look like China to me, but the guy in the hat looks kind of Chinese (not exactly sure why ), so I'll go with China.

China is right , but where in China.....?

This thread is a real cultural education!

Are you in Thames Town, near Shanghai?

Helanren 04-08-2008 12:04 AM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

 I didn't know about that one! No, it's not Thames Town, nor another Shanghai suburb, Gaoqiao, but it could have been :

Flamenco_Fleur 04-08-2008 09:18 AM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Wow, you really always dig out interesting articles. So are you in one of those 'nine towns' at all (the 'one city' being Songjiang or Thames Town)?

Helanren 04-08-2008 02:54 PM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

No, from that article I learned that they are building ten new suburbs (the distinction city-town seems to be about size) around Shanghai with different 'Western' themes (Britain, Italy, Holland, Germany, Spain, Scandinavia, Canada and America).

I am not in any of them, but from the photo I found and posted above, I could have been in Gaoqiao.... In other words, that one looks most like the place I am in.

Flamenco_Fleur 04-08-2008 05:23 PM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Arrrgh! This is really mean! All that comes up in Google is Gaoqiao, of course, along with lots of other info about that crazy Shanghai project...

May we please have another hint? :flirt:

Helanren 04-08-2008 05:39 PM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

It's becoming hard now to give another hint without spelling the answer :). There is a Wikipedia article (in English) about this location though....

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Is that Hangzhou?

EDIT: Or maybe Zhouzhuang?

Helanren 04-12-2008 02:51 PM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Neither of the two, but going from Hangzhou to Zhouzhuang you're moving in the right direction.

Another clue:

It's a village developed by somebody who at one point was the second richest man in China.

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Just thought I'd throw this in there: Is it Longquan Village?

Helanren 04-25-2008 11:24 AM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Funny, I just thought this morning it was about time to maybe give another clue, as the thread has been silent for a while ;).

It's not Longquan Village, that seems to be quite an old place whereas my village is very recent.

It was developed by a Chinese businessman who is known for the fact that he was supposed to be the first governor of a Special Administrative Region in North Korea, on the border with China, where he was to introduce a form of market economics. Before that happened however, he was arrested by the Chinese authorities and sentenced to 18 years in prison for tax evasion and other economic crimes.

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Okay, would it be the Holland Village in Liaoning?

Helanren 04-25-2008 08:57 PM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

It's actually in Shenyang, the capital city of the province of Liaoning, but given how long people have been trying to find it, I'll give you that :)!

Holland Village never really 'worked' after the arrest of Yang Bin, but it is a 450 hectare (1100 acre) large area that was supposed to include vacation villas, apartment towers, shopping districts and a theme park. It houses a collection of life size Dutch buildings, including the Gouda City Hall, Sneeker Waterpoort, the Peace Palace in The Hague and of course Amsterdam Central Station:

Your voyage next :jossun:

A churchyard obviously, relatively old but with relatively simple graves, probably not Roman Catholic, so I'll start with Northern Europe?

Wow!! A revival!! Nice job, Hels but unfortunately your guess in incorrect. :) You might want to move west.

I thought it was still open, no new question...but I guess you do not get email reminders for edits, only for new posts :)!

OK, North America then?

K'Lyn 05-13-2008 08:14 PM

Okay, it's North America. Continue... :)

And I don't get any email notifications of anything. I just keep checking.

You can get email notification of all threads you subscribe to. But then, as you are taking part in about every thread ever invented at North, I can imagine you turning off that feature....

Canada?

OK, the US then. New England?

K'Lyn 05-14-2008 11:14 PM

Yes, the US - no, not New England. :)

Helanren 05-15-2008 01:14 AM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Is there anything special about this graveyard???? Or are we just going to dissect the map of the US step by step until we arrive at, say, East Bumblef., Iowa? (pity Canada is out, I just found out about 'Sainte-Clotilde-de-Rubber-Boot, Quebec, which I kinda like the sound of :))?

Anyway, to give that a start: New York State?

K'Lyn 05-15-2008 04:45 AM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Pretty special, I think. It's not just old cemetary I threw a finger on. :) And just for the record - I know just where "'Sainte-Clotilde-de-Rubber-Boot, Quebec" is and it's a pretty strange place!

Okay, so New York State? No. You're too high.

I'm perfectly sober, thank you...

Is it a Civil War area cemetery?

Not that I'm aware of but it is known for being the resting site of several notable people.

Re: Where In The World Am I?

I bring back this thread for my return after a long break.
So, are you in California ? A place with lots of notable people !

Helanren 09-01-2009 07:35 PM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

I don't think it'll be in California, because then K'lyn would be more certain it wasn't a Civil War cemetery. As the graves seem relatively old, I'll stay at the East coast: Washington D.C.? Maybe Oak Hill Cemetery, seems to have the same kind of atmosphere ;)

K'Lyn 11-15-2009 05:27 AM

Re: Where In The World Am I?

Okay, it's not in California but Hels you were way closer with your NY guess. Even though you were too high you were very close. Veeeerrrrry close. And just so we don't spend another forever on this let me say that it is the resting place of a very famous polymath/inventor/scientist/yaddah, yaddah, yaddah... initials being BF. :silly:

Haha, I like the way you are getting in a hurry all of a sudden, and I'm impressed that 1 year, 6 months and 18 days after posting that rather indistinct graveyard photo, you still remember where you took it....;).

I never heard the word 'polymath' before, but with that information, it has to be Christ Church burial ground in Philadelphia, home to Benjamin Franklin.
Can't find another photo to prove it ;), but the one on this page seems to show some of the same gravestones.
