It's the 1000 year old Cathedral of Ani of which Wikipedia tells us in somewhat broken English 'built in A.D by the architect Trdat, it was founded by the order of the King Smbat II and ended with the patronize of the wife of the King Gagik I the queen Katranide'.

Ani is located in Armenia, or rather in the Turkish province of Kars, beside the border with Armenia. It was once the capital of a medieval Armenian kingdom that covered much of present day Armenia and eastern Turkey and was known as the "City of 1001 Churches". Ani is now a ghost city inside a Turkish military zone.

I was googling for images of 'derelict churches' in countries in the Middle East and somehow one of them showed up that seemed to be built from similar stone blocks. It was another one of the Ani churches (I suppose that Google paid more attention to 'derelict' than to either Egypt or Israel or whatever country I used at the time :)), and after that it was easy!

I am going for a short Easter trip though, so if somebody else wants to take a turn that's fine; otherwise I'll post again on tuesday.

I'll go with the Krásna Hôrka castle, a Slovakian National Cultural Monument situated 8 km eastwards from Rožňava above the village Krásnohorské Podhradie (:)).
