And now for something completely different....

N.B.: This post is hunk-free, for those of you who are skimming. ;)

I have a question about male vs. female bosses. I ask because at the place where I work (a large and complicated organization, employing many, many people) we are about to get a new second-in-command type person, boss of my boss. She will be replacing the current second-in-command type person, boss of my boss, who is not very popular. It is also pretty clear that lots and lots of people are hoping she will be better than the current person, partly because she is not him, and partly because she is a woman. All of this is particularly important to the specific unit where I work because, for various reasons, we share space with this person and her staff, so will see a lot of her. Unless they remodel again. Which they do a lot.

So. Anyway. Here's the question.

Does it really make any difference? I admit, I am one of the people who is optimistic about the new big cheese, and one of the people who was not a fan of the old one. I'm also happy that we're getting a woman boss-person. But, does her being a woman necessaily mean more gender equity in the office/organization, even if she is in favor of it? Even if she makes it her top priority, would anything really change?

And, if it is better, will it be because she's a woman, or because she's specifically her? I mean, I like her partly because she seems really sharp, and because her priorities and values seem better aligned with what I would hope to see. Also, it's possibly anyone would be better, just by vitue of being an outsider. Also, I have a really great boss right now who is a man, and have had TERRIBLE supervisers in the past who were women.

So, has anyone gone through this before? Sadly, it's sort of rare to see women have this kind of power/rank in the workplace (at least in my workplace), so I don't really even know where to go to ask. I mean, it's not like there are powerful women where I work who can mentor me and answer my questions, you know?

Wow. This is really long. So, to wrap up.....

Anyone? Ladies? Other people who have done this? Thoughts? Crazy speculations? Pet theories? Hearsay? I'll take anything. :)

Perrers being a boss especially if you are a woman is pretty hard (I know from experience) If some of your employee's are women it's difficult to know how to be with them yes you are the same gender but you can't treat them any differently than to a man. If you are overly friendly with them they treat you just like a workmate and don't really have respect for your authority so mostly you stay aloof then you are classed as a ballbreaker. There is only so much a female boss can do regarding equality because there will always be the old boys club which is hard to break into. All I can say is only time will tell, don't go making assumptions that things will change overnight cos it is still a tough world for woman with power! Especially as you say there are'nt any other female bosses where you work she really will have a difficult job.

Hmmmm. I guess not much happens here during the rest of the week.

This is definitely a problem where I work (though I hope it won't ALWAYS be the case!), but the funny thing about it is that it's not that great for a lot of men, either. Morale is sometimes kind of a problem for our whole community, and I think this is partly why.
