So what's the difference between the two colours? What thought process brought you to that conclusion? Have you ever heard an explanation of why the Russian are doing so well?

Just that you mentioned they were absolute numbers. For numbers of 50-100 or so to be significant in any country, I figured they had to be some kind of medal winners/champions, and chess was they only thing I could think of where Russia would be that much better than the rest of the world

Don't know, the numbers are confusing anyway . Can't find any set of data where GMs in Russia number more than 219, the number FIDE gives.

Can't be men/women though, there is only a handful of female GMs in the whole world.

You are correct about the numbers being confusing. I was consistent and used only the FIDE Masters numbers, for each country of the top 10 countries.
Thank you for the link explaining why Russians excel in chess.

Ah, OK: FMs rather than GMs then. Yep, that will raise all numbers, as it is a lot easier (or a lot less hard ) to become an FM than a GM
