I went to a school that shared the building with a seminary (young men studying to become priests). My seat was next to a window facing the tennis/basketball courts... I still don't know how I passed my exams

No, we never had exams in primary school, we had 'tasks' that you worked on at your own speed and on your own level. You would hand in your taskbooks at the end of the period and the teacher corrected them, but the only 'grades' you got were comments like 'very good', 'need to work on...' etc., never expressed as numbers like '8 out of 10' or so. The only 'test' done with the whole class at the same time I can remember was dictation.
The only 'exam' I think was the Cito toets which you take in the last class, and even that is officially more a tool to help in determining what type of secondary school you could go to than a formal exam. I never took it, I was in France that year, so the first real exams I had were in high school (even there, I would only call the final tests in the 6th year 'exams', but that may be a question of language )
