like i said, you did. Or if you are being technical, Stephen King wrote It.

Now you're thinking :)! But you'll have to redo your homework (it, not It.....)

linkinpark333 01-13-2014 08:08 AM

Re: Cryptomania

Hopefully, you're not referring to yourself.
You mentiioned Captain Spauding, Danno and Freud. But they didn't write the message.

Helanren 01-13-2014 04:00 PM

Re: Cryptomania

Nope, the captain and the rest had exited in good time ;). But we are talking about a very specific setting here ;)

Re: Cryptomania

which loops back to 7th century ireland, if im not mistaken

Could it be as simple that Sister Fidelma wrote it? (correct that, it said he not she)

Helanren 01-14-2014 02:11 AM

Re: Cryptomania

Yep, but especially the Ireland of Brother Eadulf and Sister Fidelma...

linkinpark333 01-14-2014 02:14 AM

Re: Cryptomania

And they are Anglo Saxon, which I said before. (going in circles)
Or is it as simple as the author of the series, Peter Treymane.

Recap:
the brother in law is Eadulf (which is important somehow)
We need the last name of the person who wrote it (either the message/books)
And its a 5x5 cipher

Helanren 01-14-2014 02:26 AM

Re: Cryptomania

Peter Tremayne, of course, is the only one writing about Eadulf and Fidelma, as they are fictional characters ;)

(though her brother Colgú mac Faílbe Flaind, who becomes King of Munster in real life as well as during the series, is an actual historic figure, so maybe he really had a sister/Sister called Fidelma, that I don't know)

linkinpark333 01-14-2014 02:33 AM

Re: Cryptomania

So Tremayne was all that was needed??

Helanren 01-14-2014 02:35 AM

Re: Cryptomania

No, that's all you wanted to go on....

linkinpark333 01-14-2014 02:38 AM

Re: Cryptomania

Huh???

Tremayne isn't his real last name, its Ellis. And i can't do anything else if I'm reading this right

... Yes, we know who wrote it, as he started by giving his last name. As for the meaning however....... that's for the far future. ...

2 days and I seem like I'm going nowhere, so I'm missing something so obvious. :banghead:

Helanren 01-14-2014 02:24 PM

Re: Cryptomania

You're not so much missing something now, as forgetting something that was apparently quite obvious to you right at the start of the puzzle

linkinpark333 01-16-2014 01:41 AM

Re: Cryptomania

WHERE this message came from (silly me) Treymane is from Coventry. So not 1 key word, but two? Or did we only needed to find where Treymane was from?

Helanren 01-16-2014 04:00 AM

Re: Cryptomania

Nope, but I wonder why you didn't try out your own suggestion ;):

i did 5x5 cipher a long time ago (playfair) Multiple times and got nowhere using the keyword. And you did say to stick to 5x5. So, i must be using the wrong 5x5 cipher, or wrong keyword.

So what did you get from Playfair then?

nonsense (don't tell me I had the answer right)]

Duh: I spelt Tremayne wrong :banghead:

decryptisdotgdslash9vpaaf

decrypt is .gd/9vpaaf But you said the 9 was a typo.

Helanren 01-16-2014 08:28 AM

Re: Cryptomania

I never said the 9 was a typo, I said it was accidental....

linkinpark333 01-16-2014 08:29 AM

Re: Cryptomania

If it was an accident, then it's not part of the answer,

decryptisdotgdslashvpaaf

But again decryptis.gd/vpaaf doesn't exist

Aha.

Decrypt is.gd/9vpaaf which brings ogham alphabet (funny was looking there  )

Helanren 01-16-2014 08:48 AM

Re: Cryptomania

There is a difference between an 'accident' and 'accidental' (meaning, the 9 could just as easily have been a 7 or an x or an o, if that's what is.gd hade made of it) ;)

Crypto mania is honoured, without crypto nobody is loved. :rotfl:

CRYPTO MANIA HONORATURSISE CRYPTO NULLUSAMATUR

Close enough ;).

The answer is actually "criptomania honoratur sine cripto nullus amatur" (with y=i, because the y is lacking from Ogham) or "cryptomania is honoured, without crypto nobody is loved", which is an adaptation of an example given on the Ogham page ;)

Spoiler:
Didn't think it would be this hard . The 5x5 shape, together with "he started by giving his last name" I thought would suggest the fairplay cipher fairly quickly - which in fact it seemed to do - and while the keyword was somewhat obscured, it wasn't that difficult either was it?

You're next :arms:

linkinpark333 01-17-2014 12:38 AM

it wasn't hard, just the keyword was a bit tricky (doesn't help if I spelt it wrong  )

the character is the newscaster from Futurama.
Decoding Alien Language 2 using this decoder gives Me luv dots, see?

Probably have to decode the top left image.
I can't see what is above his shoulder (unless it's you, Bolaf). I also see me, Hel, and Bruja in dots.

Since they are in dots, I think they could be: Binary or Morse. However, since there's 3 colors it could be base 3, or Hex.
I thought it was QR code for a bit.

Bolaf 01-19-2014 01:53 AM

Re: Cryptomania

Yes. Both, dots and colors...
... Binary or Morse ...
Neither. But there's an allusion in "Me luv dots, see?" and I don't mean Braille.
... colors ... could be base 3 ...
They are. That's his native number base (look at his hands ).

linkinpark333 01-19-2014 02:01 AM

Re: Cryptomania

Green 0 White 1 Yellow 2 or any other combo not going to work
You said colors AND dots. So, colors is base 3. Dot's are not: Braille, morse, or binary, you said. Hmm.

Would be it the number of dots, and what they represent?
E.G. the first line: 20 1211 1112 11 21 10 121011

Do we find the message in Morbo's dots? If so, could you give us a sharper enlargement than this ;)?

White? Isn't it (light) blue?
But you're right, that's their values.

Only their values - same as in decimal ('77' is 77, not 27)

Bad bad Nord. Must convert all to crappy JPG.

White? Isn't it (light) blue?

It's a slightly greyish white :):

Spoiler:

but I suppose it doesn't matter exactly, as long as you can discern it from the others?
(and the avatar colours are unimportant as well?)

Hmmm, the grid is actually made up of 4 things, green, grey, yellow and blanks - but too many of those to just suggest spacings between letters/words

Bolaf 01-19-2014 03:03 AM

Re: Cryptomania

... slightly greyish white ... doesn't matter exactly ...
Like you said, as long as it can be identified (as '1') it's ok.

... avatar colours ...
We (our pics/names) don't play an active role in this puzzle. I just had to fill the other tiles nicely.

linkinpark333 01-19-2014 03:04 AM

Re: Cryptomania

Morbo's shows are on the √2 Television Network. I agree with hel with the spacing. It's also weird with the numbers: e.g. 0002200 It looks like Hex color code.

Bolaf 01-19-2014 03:06 AM

Re: Cryptomania

... √2 ...
Correct, but not important for us.

... grid is actually made up of 4 things ...
Dots and colours are independent.
The blanks are only for the dots.
The colors are sequential (line wise), ignoring blanks.

linkinpark333 01-19-2014 03:14 AM

Re: Cryptomania

The size is 25x25=625 so there goes my theory with spacing.
Spacing isn't binary

Bolaf 01-19-2014 03:24 AM

Re: Cryptomania

... looks like Hex color code ...
The 3 colors simply are symbols for the digits 0, 1 and 2.
I could have used other colours; just wanted the dots to look like little lights/LEDs in a computer panel.

... 25x25 ...
Well, the number 5 plays a certain role in the dot pattern (a not so well known and relatively new - compared e.g. to Braille - encoding method; but there's even fonts for it).
