Well, it's going to be hard to come up with something new and top that off :cheesy:! Let's think.....

Well, my first try was pencil+paper, and crossed the letters out according to the grid... so word+excel+paint was really an improvement  (translated into plain English: I didn't think of courier new )

in that case, I could have saved myself the trouble of transposing it to get rid of the G

I actually wondered about the 'too easy' pattern, but I didn't want to make it too hard musically either. And I thought the # could also serve as an "internal" clue, so transposing made sense anyway.

Considered the phrase being spelled by a 18th century French, so I didn't mind the strange articulation anyway.

Yes, the # was a severe indicator for me to activate my vocal chords. Forthwith I chanted the notes cheerfully whilst clapping my hands and stomping my feet - and suddenly my heart burst open like being pecked by a unicorn and out came a gorgeous little rainbow... but I digress.

Third Episode: The Red Codebook.
Gučrande decodes the Vampire gangs messages with a red codebook taken from the body of the Grand Inquisitor.

Now we only have to find that codebook and use it to decode the message

Found an image of the codebook:
Spoiler:

What letters is he crossing out and why? The episode is 40 minutes long... Maybe the key is there

Well, following the same procedure (top left corner, top right corner, bottom left and bottom right, once and again) I got this:

Visual clues in hard riddles are fine, but you won't need any more info to figure out where Philipe went: Night clubbing

(Obviously, the punctuation marks are mine)

I'd like to know how that sounds in English (or German, for that matter), but it's really hilarious in Spanish!

Pencil + paper, as always... let's see how many mistakes you find when you solve it
I haven't had time to think about a dark and encrypted clue... so feel free to ask and I'll try not to give it away with the first hint

17-11 / 25-4+1 / 20-10+9 / 17-1 / 12-2+10 / 26-11+9 / 11-1+5 / 19-9+4 / 7-9 / 26+9-10 / 20-10+8 / 18-12+11 / 20-19+13 / 11-1+9

... points to symbol fakery (and to the statement that maths wasn't your #1 school subject)...
I guess this isn't about calculation then. Still trying to interpret those terms in different ways...

Re: Cryptomania

Are they dates? Nov. 17 - Apr. 24/Apr. 25/Apr. 24 and 25/May 25 - etc.?

[edit] Ooops, no, the one before last puts an end to that (unless Spain just introduced the 19-month year, as part of the austerity measures?)

Stroke count ?

Re: Cryptomania

"I hate maths" is the main clue :nodder: (no maths involved here)
symbol fakery... well, had I found real symbols to make that cryptogram I would have used them, but I had to draw my own. Fortunately I didn't have to make up anything this time.
Stroke count... mmm.... getting warm, I'd say

...and no, we didn't introduce a 19-month year... yet, but please don't give any ideas to Spanish politicians

26 is the highest number -> alphabet ?

17-11 = Q-K = 2-3 = -1 :doubt:?
25-4 = Y-D = 3-2, + 1 = 2
20-10= T-J = 2-2, +9 =9
17-1 = Q-A = 2-3 = -1 :doubt:?

doesn't seem to work that way

use undercast instead maybe ?

17-11 = q-k = 2-3 = -1 ?
25-4 = y-d = 2-2, + 1 = 1
20-10= t-j = 2-1, +9 = 10
17-1 = q-a = 2-2 = 0 ?

still stuck with negatives... :doubt:, needs rethinking...

Bruja 05-21-2013 09:19 PM

Re: Cryptomania

Let me put you in the right track:

10+11 = j+k = q

Obvious, isn't it?

Bolaf 05-22-2013 01:42 AM

Re: Cryptomania

If j+k=q then you must have used all (2) neurons...

Bruja 05-22-2013 10:29 AM

Re: Cryptomania

Did "j+k" spoil everything? Or did you already know what to do?
I guess Hel has already solved it, but in case he hasn't had time and wants to try by himself I think we should wait for him before explaining the "complex, difficult, hard and elaborate" method of hiding the message.

Your turn to surprise us again, Bolaf :jossun:

Bolaf 05-22-2013 06:09 PM

Re: Cryptomania

Funny. I copied your terms and looked at them offline. A long while I was focussing on the +/- signs, presuming (due to the 'hate math' motto) they'd mean something different from adding/subtracting, whereas the numbers [1...26] were obviously mapping the alphabet; but still, I couldn't make sense of it. At some point I mumbled to myself: "Heck, there must be a pattern! Am I blind?"
And in that very moment the word 'blind' made me see another possibility...
- numbers -> letters -> braille
- apply addition/subtraction to the visual dots
- get resulting braille: i use two neurons

Back to the mental workbench...

Helanren 05-23-2013 03:02 AM

Re: Cryptomania

How about - NOPE, FORGET IT

(I did the 'math', found a J instead of I for the first letter and had a laugh :): "J use two neurons".)

But when I continued I found the solution wasn't
- get resulting braille: i use two neurons
but "JUST TWO NEURONS"

 no mistakes at all

Bruja 05-23-2013 08:54 AM

Re: Cryptomania

Glad to hear that, I thought I had messed up the I/J and Bolaf had consequently modified the E/T (And as I used pencil+rubber I couldn't check my work again)

Bolaf 05-23-2013 11:10 AM

Re: Cryptomania

Spoiler:
Oops. Thanks for clarification, Hel. Yep, it's true, I was too hasty (literally translating blindly), misread the J (for an I) and rudely modified the T...

Ok, the next one might look a little enigmatic, but I assure that you don't need more than just one neuron for the math part - and I hope you'll have fun investigating the bronze object (this was a hint)...

I googled the numbers on top and googlemaps led me to Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań:
Among the University's most famous graduates are the mathematicians who broke the Enigma machine
Now I hope I'm totally wrong and this is not related to the Enigma, I've read a lot about it in the past... and never understood how it worked!!!

[edit] and I've just discovered The bombe was known as the "Bronze Goddess" because of its colour...

Please, tell me I'm barking up the wrong tree :frown:

... mathematicians who broke the Enigma machine ...
Yes, and their names are (indirectly) involved...

... Enigma machine ...
... The bombe ...
 Naaah, I'm not that mean.
Like I said, the math part is easy-peasy.

Bruja 05-23-2013 02:55 PM

Re: Cryptomania

google maps is not cooperating... I followed wiki directions and moved my mannequin down the street, then I reached what I think is the University (although the name was written where I was first, and the building was also drawn in the map in my former location, but in this new place I can see the building that matches the University pictures... I'm confused)

Crossed the street but saw nothing interesting. In the middle of the boulevard (direct Spanish translation, it may not be the right term) I saw Adam's statue and a monumet (victims, again according to wiki)...

I'm really shortsighted and my stilettos are killing me, I think I'll leave the walking to Hel :cheesy:
