Re: Cryptomania Spoiler: Well, it's going to be hard to come up with something new and top that off :cheesy:! Let's think..... |
Re: Cryptomania Well, my first try was pencil+paper, and crossed the letters out according to the grid... so word+excel+paint was really an improvement :lol: (translated into plain English: I didn't think of courier new :tongue:) |

Re: Cryptomania 1 Attachment(s) Third Episode: The Red Codebook. Gučrande decodes the Vampire gangs messages with a red codebook taken from the body of the Grand Inquisitor. Now we only have to find that codebook and use it to decode the message :tongue: Found an image of the codebook: Spoiler: What letters is he crossing out and why? The episode is 40 minutes long... Maybe the key is there ...Or maybe we don't need to watch more than a few seconds :tongue: |
Re: Cryptomania 2 Attachment(s) Nice find :bow: Spoiler: So far, Bolaf's code is still nonsense, so I supppose a second decryption is needed ;) |
Re: Cryptomania Well, following the same procedure (top left corner, top right corner, bottom left and bottom right, once and again) I got this: Visual clues in hard riddles are fine, but you won't need any more info to figure out where Philipe went: Night clubbing (Obviously, the punctuation marks are mine) |
Re: Cryptomania :lol: I got this: "viefalebueyonhondreedlny....." - but I didn't copy the bottom line :lol:! |
Re: Cryptomania :rotfl: No wonder you thought we had to decrypt that! |
Re: Cryptomania :nod: This is pretty much solved; yet the final task remains... to figure out where Philipe went nightclubbing ;) |
Re: Cryptomania The only club I found while reading about the series and episodes was "The Howling Cat"... I guess he went there, didn't he? from wiki: " Following clues in the booklet he arrives at "The Howling Cat" night club" |
Re: Cryptomania 1 Attachment(s) |
Re: Cryptomania 2 Attachment(s) Attachment 72518 I'd like to know how that sounds in English (or German, for that matter), but it's really hilarious in Spanish! Pencil + paper, as always... let's see how many mistakes you find when you solve it :rolleyes: I haven't had time to think about a dark and encrypted clue... so feel free to ask and I'll try not to give it away with the first hint :tongue: 17-11 / 25-4+1 / 20-10+9 / 17-1 / 12-2+10 / 26-11+9 / 11-1+5 / 19-9+4 / 7-9 / 26+9-10 / 20-10+8 / 18-12+11 / 20-19+13 / 11-1+9 [edit] At last I thought of a clue: Spoiler: |
Re: Cryptomania ... clue ... ... points to symbol fakery (and to the statement that maths wasn't your #1 school subject)... I guess this isn't about calculation then. Still trying to interpret those terms in different ways... |
Re: Cryptomania Are they dates? Nov. 17 - Apr. 24/Apr. 25/Apr. 24 and 25/May 25 - etc.? [edit] Ooops, no, the one before last puts an end to that (unless Spain just introduced the 19-month year, as part of the austerity measures?) Stroke count :thinking:? |
Re: Cryptomania "I hate maths" is the main clue :nodder: (no maths involved here) symbol fakery... well, had I found real symbols to make that cryptogram I would have used them, but I had to draw my own. Fortunately I didn't have to make up anything this time. Stroke count... mmm.... getting warm, I'd say ...and no, we didn't introduce a 19-month year... yet, but please don't give any ideas to Spanish politicians :rolleyes: |
Re: Cryptomania 26 is the highest number -> alphabet :thinking:? 17-11 = Q-K = 2-3 = -1 :doubt:? 25-4 = Y-D = 3-2, + 1 = 2 20-10= T-J = 2-2, +9 =9 17-1 = Q-A = 2-3 = -1 :doubt:? ..... doesn't seem to work that way :thinking: |
Re: Cryptomania 1 Attachment(s) Quote:
But remember... no maths involved here [edit] ahhh! Now I see what you intended to do. That's the idea!!! |
Re: Cryptomania Quote:
17-11 = q-k = 2-3 = -1 ? 25-4 = y-d = 2-2, + 1 = 1 20-10= t-j = 2-1, +9 = 10 17-1 = q-a = 2-2 = 0 ? still stuck with negatives... :doubt:, needs rethinking... |
Re: Cryptomania Let me put you in the right track: 10+11 = j+k = q Obvious, isn't it? :tongue: |
Re: Cryptomania If j+k=q then you must have used all (2) neurons... |
Re: Cryptomania :tongue: Did "j+k" spoil everything? Or did you already know what to do? I guess Hel has already solved it, but in case he hasn't had time and wants to try by himself I think we should wait for him before explaining the "complex, difficult, hard and elaborate" method of hiding the message. Your turn to surprise us again, Bolaf :jossun: |
Re: Cryptomania Funny. I copied your terms and looked at them offline. A long while I was focussing on the +/- signs, presuming (due to the 'hate math' motto) they'd mean something different from adding/subtracting, whereas the numbers [1...26] were obviously mapping the alphabet; but still, I couldn't make sense of it. At some point I mumbled to myself: "Heck, there must be a pattern! Am I blind?" And in that very moment the word 'blind' made me see another possibility... - numbers -> letters -> braille - apply addition/subtraction to the visual dots - get resulting braille: i use two neurons Back to the mental workbench... |
Re: Cryptomania Nice one.... not that I had solved it... :lol: Spoiler: |
Re: Cryptomania Glad to hear that, I thought I had messed up the I/J and Bolaf had consequently modified the E/T (And as I used pencil+rubber I couldn't check my work again) |
Re: Cryptomania Spoiler: Ok, the next one might look a little enigmatic, but I assure that you don't need more than just one neuron for the math part - and I hope you'll have fun investigating the bronze object (this was a hint)... ----> 52.4075 16.9192 <---- +-------------------------+ |-9-6 8-3 1-1 8 6 9 8 1-6 | | 1-9 8-3-5 3 1 4 4-1-5 3 | |-5 6 4 8 9 5 0 1-7 8-5 8 | | 8 7-4-4-4 0 4-9 4 8-3 1 | |-7-3 5-8-9-3 3 2-4 5 4-4 | | 1 1 8 9 3-7 9 9-2-7-4-1 | |-9 3 0 4 5-5 6 9 0 7 5-1 | |-3-9 6 2-9 9-4 8 5 9-8 4 | | 1 0-3-6 4 3-6-9 1 5-6 9 | |
Re: Cryptomania I googled the numbers on top and googlemaps led me to Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań: Among the University's most famous graduates are the mathematicians who broke the Enigma machine Now I hope I'm totally wrong and this is not related to the Enigma, I've read a lot about it in the past... and never understood how it worked!!! [edit] and I've just discovered The bombe was known as the "Bronze Goddess" because of its colour... Please, tell me I'm barking up the wrong tree :frown: |
Re: Cryptomania ... Adam Mickiewicz University ... ... the right crossing, but the wrong side of the street ;) Zoom in as far as you can... and don't bang your nose against it... ... mathematicians who broke the Enigma machine ... Yes, and their names are (indirectly) involved... ... Enigma machine ... ... The bombe ... :no: Naaah, I'm not that mean. Like I said, the math part is easy-peasy. |
Re: Cryptomania google maps is not cooperating... I followed wiki directions and moved my mannequin down the street, then I reached what I think is the University (although the name was written where I was first, and the building was also drawn in the map in my former location, but in this new place I can see the building that matches the University pictures... I'm confused) Crossed the street but saw nothing interesting. In the middle of the boulevard (direct Spanish translation, it may not be the right term) I saw Adam's statue and a monumet (victims, again according to wiki)... I'm really shortsighted and my stilettos are killing me, I think I'll leave the walking to Hel :cheesy: |
Re: Cryptomania 2 Attachment(s) ... google maps is not cooperating ... Strange. Maybe that's browser-dependent. ... shortsighted ... leave the walking to Hel ... When I open google maps at those coordinates, switch to satellite view and zoom in a little I get this: Spoiler: See the green arrow in the center? See where it points at? Another hint: our bronze object has... Spoiler: ... sides :) |
Re: Cryptomania 1 Attachment(s) I broke one of my shoes' heels, but I managed to climb that fence... and found this: Attachment 72618 Now we need to: 1 - Find a better image, 2 - Guess which side/s we must use, and 3 - Find out what to do with it Well.... now it'll be pretty straighforward :tongue: |
Re: Cryptomania 1 - :nod: 2 - only the upper half? 3 - try simplest math possible :207: |
Re: Cryptomania 3 Attachment(s) The upper half of Marian Rejewski, I presume... (as that would be the side we'd be looking at if we actually climbed that fence coming from the other side of the street) But if we were there we could see that the three sides have different numbers: Spoiler: |
Re: Cryptomania ... Rejewski ... I wouldn't prefer one to the others. ... sides have different numbers ... Yes, amazing, isn't it? They must have reckoned someone would really walk around this lump and check that out. Clever Poles. |
Re: Cryptomania 2 Attachment(s) I've found a better pic of zygalski's side... Spoiler: but the simplest maths are not working... or I can't read the right numbers yet. [edit] In my computer screen the image was much neater... :frown: [second edit] Zygalski's numbers: Spoiler: I'll be back with the other sides, when I can read them Attachment 72627 |
Re: Cryptomania 1 Attachment(s) Quote:
Spoiler: OK, let's see where you all got to in the mean time.... [edit] In my search for the full text, google keeps sending me here.... and then asks for money :lol: [edit2] Best I can make up for the Marian Rejewski side is Spoiler: But I have a feeling we are making things too complicated perhaps....? |
Re: Cryptomania ... the full text ... asks for money ... Hehe... 33.00 EUR minimum... for some probably silly blah about a handful of decimal digits :rolleyes: Hey, we should monetize this thread :tongue: ... making things too complicated ... Well, I used only the top 9 lines (didn't want to write a novel) of the monument. Those should be nicely readable on most photos. |
Re: Cryptomania So you have no need for my full size Zygalski then :banghead:? Spoiler: Jerzy Różycki was a bit harder to find ;) Spoiler: |
Re: Cryptomania Hel, I don't know how you found those images, I spent a long time yesterday trying to find the numbers and didn't make it... Of course, now it was easy, but it was all your work. So... do you want to solve it (in case you already have something)? Or would you prefer me to give the answer (in case you don't have anything)? |
