A Happy New Year to you all

I hope you had a good ending to the Old and a marvelous start of the New

So this is the new year.
and i don't feel any different.
I know I did. And I thought that maybe it would be nice to tell about it. That way you might get a glimpse of what it can be like to celebrate this time-changing event  in the Netherlands. One can't read anything about it on wikipedia, though in this case I was quite surpris by its accuracy! That is, for how we celebrated it this year - for somehow every year it is different and almost every family/person celebrates it differently. But I guess that is the case for all holidays

New Year's Eve is called Oud en Nieuw ("Old and New") or simply oudejaarsavond ("old year's evening", logical since it's still part of the old year), and is usually celebrated as a cosy evening with family or friends. Traditional snack foods are oliebollen (oil dumplings) and appelbeignets (apple slice fritters). On television, the main feature is the oudejaarsconférence, a performance by one of the major Dutch cabaretiers (comparable to stand-up comedy, but more serious; generally including a satirical review of the year's politics). In Reformed Protestant families, Psalm 90 is read, although this tradition is now fading away. At midnight, Glühwein or Champagne is drunk. Many people fire off their own fireworks, which are on sale from a few days before; towns don't organise a central fireworks display. Public transport shuts down completely (the only scheduled time during the year) between approximately 20:00 and 01:00.

As you can read on wikipedia (see spoiler above), we call it "Old and New" and talk about Old Year's Eve instead of New Year's Eve Way more logical of course

Anyhow, to celebrate this time we went with about 3 families to a "camping farm" way out east. We were almost at the German border. And I say 3 families, but some brought grandparents, some brought neighbours... All in all we were with about 30 people I guess. And 3 dogs, very important of course for those dogs make it more fun to go outside walking
For those of you who don't know what I mean with "camping farm": it's a building which was formerly a farm, but is now a group accommodation. Downstairs we had a big kitchen, a bar, a big "living room" and seperate bathroom facilities (2 showers, 4 toilets, 4 sinks) for males/females. Upstairs were the dormitories, one for the adults and one for the children - both with bunk beds but quite spacy. And a small room in between were the "older people" slept - though of course nobody put it that way .
Spoiler:

Enough beverage to last 3 days The green bottle named "Sonnema Beerenburg" is my favourite drink and only made in the Nort/West part of the Netherlands. It is quite strong so I can't have much of it
What we did all day? Well, nothing special actually ... It was just a happy being together with no compulsory activities I for one have been on a long walk in the woods with my cousin, which wasn't supposed to be that long but of course we managed to get lost I played about 10 different games of poker, and it went quite well as long as I just betted without looking at my cards. I actually wan 2 rounds that way. But in the end I always was the first one to be out of the game, all 10 times I played all sorts of other card games I had never heard of before. I joined some hide and seek in the dark. I watched a supposedly scary movie and had a good laugh. I went out with the dogs at 6 a.m. because I was the only one up and about that early - I was just too excited about everything the days could bring to sleep longer than 3 hours The second day, only 2 of the dogs wanted to come with me - the other two stayed and pretended to be asleep
Spoiler:

All the games we had taken along. I played them all at least once Hmmm... it doesn't look that much on the picture, but trust me - we had many to choose from
Oh, and lets not forget the possibility to skate Most Dutch people like ice skating, but it isn't that often that we're able to skate on "natural ice". I borrowed somebody's skates though and tried the ice on 31 December. A good ending of the old year Of course I fell a great deal, but that couldn't spoil the fun. I guess skating is just one of those things I'll never learn but will always enjoy heavily So far I haven't broken any bones and nobody skated over my fingers so I had a good time. And of course the people watching had a good laugh
Spoiler:
I'm not skating on any of these pictures (we didn't have a camera then) - but to give you an idea of the size of the lake.

And yes, there weren't that many other people in the area we were staying. Otherwise it would have been much more crowded on the ice

Ow blast, I'm way too much again I got to go! But I'll put up the final part tomorrow, and I promise that it will be about the Old/New Year celebration! For there was one thing that wasn't mentioned on wikipedia...

ah looks like a good time and wow that skating on the ice already, we're just allowed to go since today since the ice is thick enough (mind you it's on the "Damse Vaart") so a bit of difference with a lake i guess, oh and Kolonisten of Catan is a great game!
