So I rant a lot about work. I like my job...I dislike our manager. Things worked better when the manager was on holiday for a month. We still had problems (being short staffed, etc) but things were dealt with and things were getting DONE.
Now that the manager is back, all the mgr. does is delegate. Which is appropriate for certain things, but not for EVERYTHING.
Case in point:
Because we're shortstaffed, I was asked to work the later shift this week.
Fine, no problem.
But because we're looking for people to work the later shift this week and next week, the Mgr asked for volunteers. One person volunteered for a shift this week and Mgr told her to talk to me (since I was already scheduled to work it) to see if I wanted to trade a shift.
Fine, no problem.
Person and I traded shifts on Thursday. I work the early one, she works the later one.
Still good...no problem.
I call Mgr to inform that we've traded shifts, ask if I have to fill out the paperwork, or if it's okay if I just tell the Mgr. (Because I'm fully aware that by trading shifts, other person is going to get paid double time -which is fine with me - but if I stayed to work it, only regular salary would be paid out to me). Mgr says it's fine (I don't tell Mgr about the double time thing. I figure Management should know that before me!)
THIS is the part that irritates me.
Mgr asks me if I changed it in the schedule book.
I tell Mgr that I was told I wasn't allowed to make changes in the schedule book/payroll book.. Only senior people and management could do that (otherwise any staff member could just randomly put in that they worked overtime or take vacation pay or whatever). Mgr says "Oh, okay, I'll just walk over to the book and put the changes in."
The Mgr's office is literally 4 m (about 12 feet) away from the schedule book. *I* am 7 floors away.
MY thoughts are:
a) It's your JOB to approve changes in scheduling and payroll!
b) You're right there!
c) Quit delegating and DO something for a change!

Ahhh the art of delegating.....
You said to share so here's one I had today.....
Whilst I am quietly sitting at work I get a message pop up on my screen.
The message was there to say that said person in question was GOING to post something but decided not to....
So now said person takes great delight in sitting back knowing they have left me wondering what was originally going to be said.
Not looking at anyone in particular mind you........
(well it happened at work so it should count)Posted 11-10-2008 at 11:31 AM by Nitehawk

Management by CHAOS: setting goals, refuse means
Management by JEANS: at the most prominet places are the biggest rivets (maybe not understandable translated: in German Niete means the thingies on a jeans as well as somebody who has really NO idea)
Management by HELICOPTER: arriving, swirling up a lot of dust and then go away fastPosted 11-10-2008 at 10:35 PM by Tarya Nórui
