Have you ever been doing something so long, you do it without thinking about what you're doing?
I mean, like me at the shop.. I go in, make sure the paint shed's tables are full so the girls can be painting, Then I either wait on customers, bring in orders, work out in the yard straightening the statues up and cleaning the lot, picking up the broken, rotted pallets and replacing them with new ones. making deliveries, etc.. etc.. etc.. and so on and so on .. well you get the idea.
I do this and never really think about how what I do affects someone else.
Last Saturday, I had a man and his wife come up to me and ask me about a small fishing boy statue w make, with a little stump you can get to sit him on, and also a little hat that is made to fit him.
I only had one, and it was eaten up real bad with air bubbles when it was poured, so I had brought it in the paint shed to be fixed and painted, since it looked too abd to be plain.
I told the man this, and said i'd be glad to let him see it, to make sure thats what he wanted, then I'd get him one made new.
His wife looked at it after I sat it up and placed the hat on its head, and she fell in love with it.
So, I took their names and phone number, and wrote up an order for it so Floyd could get Daniel to pour one plain concrete.
The week was almost up, and still no fishing boy, so I took that one, fixed it up nice and pretty myself, cleraned it up and smoothes it, and set it outside for them.
Today, while I was loading another truck, they came to get it, and Barry loaded it for them.
On their way out of the lot, they sropped behind me , and rolling the window down, he hollered out at me and thanked me for getting the fishing boy done for them.
to see the happy smile on their faces, and top hear how glad they were, made it worthwhile to have done what I did fgor them. I mean, I nkow it was nothing but a little statue for gosh sakes, but to see how it brought a little happiness to someone. thats what does it for me, to see how excited people get when they pick up their orders I've gotten ready for them.
For another example, last weekend another guy picked up two painted seats and a fishing girl statue, of a girl sitting cross legged ,wearing pig tails, with a place in her hands to place a cane pole.
Christie, on of the boss' daughters in law, told me today the lady that ordered them called and was thanking her for getting that order ready. Turns out her little girl had passed away, and wore her hair in pig tails, just like the statue,
and her birthday was a few days after they'd picked up the order. Christie said the lady had sounded so pitiful on the phone.
Its amazing to me how much these things we make can touch someone like that. Little things like that, make it worthwhile, like I said above, for all the effort, work, sweat, and curse words I've put into my job so far.
I do nearly everything here alone. I do not care if the others want to help me or not. I can actually do it better and faster by myself anyways.

I know what you mean. I'm a loner at work, too, at least then I know it's getting done and done right. (Besides, no one cares like I do!)
You are a lucky man, to even notice that what you do affects others and be touched by and enjoy it. Not just a work drone, getting through the day, making a buck, and the heck with other people and the customers.
And they are lucky to find you, someone who actually cares and has a sense of what is important when they come in. Someone who really has an old-fashioned outlook, at least it is these days. You care about it being right for them, the customer. Like it should be!
Hugs, and stay as nice as you are!

It's indeed quite amazing how some things get to you
Little things mostly, maybe because you don't expect them to
