I'm a college drop out now :P
Posted 12-12-2007 at 06:22 AM by bg38
yes i just dropped out a few minutes ago.
I sat up till 12 am the other night working on a research paper for color theory class.
the instructor then writes me today and tells me i plagiarized the damned thing.
" she shows me a list of high school papers and claims I took information from them. I guess she never stopped to think that maybe we all used the same internet for sources.
I told her I refused to stay at a school that repeatedly accused me of stealing. I am not, nor ever will be a thief.
I have always worked my butt off for what I do have.
And I have never resorted to lying cheating or stealing someone else's stuff do get it.
She then has nerve enough to talk about my educational shortcomings about writing college essays.
Heck, I've never been to college. I haven't been in school since 1983!! I dropped out in high school so I could support my father.
If that isn't good enough for them then the hell with them I say!! I learned more on my own than I did with this Art Institute Online anyway.
and i will continue teaching myself.
I even asked her was she sure I was writing my e mail to her, and didn't copy it from someone else. The B$%^&.....
ps. this is an actual clip from the reply i sent her.
"I am sorry that you are not familiar with the proper way to write a scholarly paper. It is a severe shortcoming in your former education." <-- notice the quotes. I don't want to be accused of stealing this as well. I dropped out of high school in the tenth grade for your information. I had to get a job to support my dad who was a disabled veteran. I'm sorry my former education isn't up to your high standards."
So now My education isn't good enough for her? bah!

Re: I'm a college drop out now :P
bg,
Please do not allow this one person stop you from accomplishing your goal there. I assume this is a community college, or university near you, and they should have a student support department who should hear your problem and help you transfer to another class. It is inexcusable that an educator would resort to such a low blow, and as an adult paying for continuing education, you deserve more respectful treatment. That statement was clearly meant to discourage, insult, and degrade you. A good teacher lifts a student up, not puts them down. If you can cite your sources for the paper, I would bring it up with the admin., surely they don't want this kind of thing going on.Posted 12-12-2007 at 07:07 AM by Valkyrie

Ken Chan,
Oh, yes, I see that now. Thank you for pointing that out. I never said that she didn't have the right to question him, but her statement about his prior education was out of line. I still think so, online or not. And if Bg thinks he was treated unfairly, and can prove it, then any institution (online or not) who took his money (assuming, of course, the class is not free) should allow him the courtesy of proving himself. I'd hate to see him stop because of a misunderstanding.
At the very least, bg, I hope you don't get discouraged.

Re: I'm a college drop out now :P
Aw Ben I am sorry
I do agree with Valkyrie though. I was never accused of cheating but I had a teacher that did not like and went pretty low to get me out. I got some appologizes in the end but they where lucky I did not take it further. Some people are just not fit too teach. Luckly I didn't give up and I had some really great classes after I finished with those teachers. I droped out eventually because of my illness but at least not the way the guy wanted me to drop out
I hope whatever the outcome its something that you are happy with.
Your talent doesn't go away wheter you are enrolled in the course or not.Posted 12-12-2007 at 09:49 PM by ijsbeer

Re: I'm a college drop out now :P
From what you had described, her remarks seem to be unnecessary and insulting.
Academically/scholarly-wise citations and sources are teh important (heck, I suspect that they worship them) and plagiarizing is almost like the new black death. That is one big thing to look out for. I agree with what Valkyrie had said - bring it up with the admin if you can cite your sources
I'm not sure how your online education works but
from what I know, admin > tutors.
Good luck

Oh Bg, I didn't know you were Ken-Chan! I was wondering why he replied to your blog! And you're Ben, too? I'm all confused now! Anyway, if you cited your sources, that stinks. Good luck with it, Bg38.Posted 12-13-2007 at 04:09 PM by Valkyrie
