Something Beautiful at Mile One
Canada, United States and Europe, after 12 years of traveling non-stop by truck, bus and plane, anyone would beg for a rest. That’s what Alan Doyle, Séan McCann and Bob Hallet are planning to do.
Great Big Sea will be making their final stop here, in St. John’s, on Saturday, December 4 at Mile One before taking a long and well deserved break. The Newfoundlanders, along with bass player Murray Foster (Ontario) and drummer Kris MacFarlane (Nova Scotia) released their newest CD “Something Beautiful” last February and have been touring since, performing in the States, often to sold out venues, across Canada and also in Denmark, opening for ‘Runrig’ at the Tonder Festival. They announced in the November issue of their Newsletter that the band will take a break after the Mile One show along with the release of a new album in 2005.
The band has been very successful with their Newfoundland tunes while still climbing the charts with their original compositions. With the release of the last two albums, “Sea of No Cares” and “Something Beautiful”, the rock sound of Great Big Sea has been spreading around the continent, bringing new fans to the group.
It is no secret they have been working steadily on a new record. They started it almost as soon as they finished Something Beautiful, and have been recording sporadically ever since. The 'trad record', as they are calling it, will contain GBS's trademark energy, bizarre harmonies, odd guests and obscure Newfoundland in-jokes, all performed without the benefit of electricity. No release date has yet been fixed, and they have no plans for any elaborate touring. The album will hopefully be released in 2005.
Despite playing a ridiculous amount of shows in the past 12 months, they somehow found the time to enmesh themselves in a bewildering array of outside projects. Alan produced two records for solo artists Barry Canning and Michelle Doyle, and still found time to contribute to some soundtrack work for film and TV. Bob did some producing of his own, for the Moncton traditional band Banshee, and is increasingly busy with management work. Sean has switched to Players Light and is trying to not take everything so personally. He is growing his hair to look more like Alan and has suspiciously won the Benevolent Irish Society's Super Saturday bingo six times this year. Murray found the time to record and play with alt-country heroes the Jayne Waynes, while Kris has performed with dozens of East Coast artists, all over the continent.
Their last show is scheduled for Saturday, December 4th, at Mile One Stadium with special guest, Jimmy Rankin, and introducing Liam Titcomb. Based on past performances, there is a general feeling that the end of the tour, at Mile One will be a memorable one. For tickets call Mile One box office at 576.7657.
