Griffin: “van” in “Vincent van Gogh” is not a given name, but part of his last name. It’s actually a preposition/prefix meaning “of” or “(coming) from”, so it is usually (though not always) combined with the name of a place (I am not sure what Gogh refers to).
It is therefore also not written with a capital (except of course at the beginning of a sentence, when all words are written with a capital) unless it has merged with the placename (which you see often with the names of e.g. Americans of Dutch descent, like Vanderbilt), or when the original understanding of the name has been lost (Lee Van Cleef). In fact, alphabetically the name “van Gogh” comes under G, not V.
