2.8.1589: Assassination of Henry III.
During the siege of Paris the Dominican Monk Jacques Clément stabbed the French king Henry III. The royal servants executed the assassin, who was a supporter of the Roman Catholic Holy League. With the murder of Henry III the last king of the House of Valois died, his successor Henry IV from Navarra established the Bourbon dynasty. Henry III was voted king of Poland in 1574 and had received the French crown in 1572. After concessions to the Huguenots in the Peace Treaty of Beaulieu (1576), Spain had concluded a secret contract with the Holy League of Péronne to prevent a Protestant succession.
