Jan Andriaanszoon (Leeghwater) proposes draining the Haarlemmermeer in Holland, using 160 of his multistaged water lifts, but the cost of 3,600,000 guilders is too great for the plan to be financed. The Haarlemmermeer is not drained until 1852. Andriaanszoon is hired by the Duc d'Epernon to drain the marshes of Gironde.
